Objetivo General

El objetivo general de COCO es evitar o mitigar la corrosión a alta temperatura de nuevos materiales de bajo coste candidatos para usar en las plantas termosolares (CSP) de nueva generación usando un ciclo Brayton.

Concretamente, las hipótesis de trabajo de COCO se basan en el desarrollo de nuevas mezclas de sal fundida estables, de menor coste y menos corrosivas y en el uso de recubrimientos en aceros inoxidables mecánicamente estables para reemplazar los materiales con base de níquel.

Sales

Se están desarrollando en la UCM mezclas optimizadas de sal fundida a alta temperatura. Estas mezclas se basan en carbonato ternario y cuaternario a base de carbonato de litio y/o sales de cloruro incluyendo MgCl2 capaz de trabajar a 700°C. La inclusión de aditivos como nano-polvos de Al2O3, grafeno además para mejorar las propiedades térmicas y la resistencia a la corrosión y para disminuir la viscosidad y el punto de congelación a < 400°C se estudia particularmente en el proyecto. También se realiza una caracterización profunda basada en la determinación de las propiedades térmicas y fisicoquímicas relevantes. Propiedades tales como el punto de fusión, la estabilidad térmica, el calor específico, la composición química y la densidad se evalúan durante más tiempo con el fin de obtener resultados fiables para la ampliación y la aplicación comercial.

Usos Particulares de las Nuevas Mezclas

Posibles usos de los nuevos desarrollos de las diferentes mezclas con sal fundida para las plantas termosolares (CSP).

Sal Fundida

El uso de una mezcla de sal fundida a base de carbonato ternario y cuaternario y/o cloruro permitirá potencialmente temperaturas por encima de 700°C, lo que aumentaría significativamente la eficiencia del ciclo de Rankine actualmente implementado en las plantas de CSP y también cumpliría algunos de los requisitos para una nueva generación de turbinas basadas en el ciclo Brayton.

Recubrimientos

Los recubrimientos basados en la aplicación de slurries se desarrollan actualmente en el INTA para la protección contra la corrosión por sal fundida y CO2 supercrítico. Este proceso de recubrimiento es adecuado para los componentes de la planta termosolar, incluidos los tanques y las superficies internas de los tubos y tuberías, siendo uno de los procesos de recubrimiento conocidos como de menor coste, ya que no requiere equipos sofisticados y costosos.
Las fases de aluminuros de Fe y Ni desarrolladas en aceros austeníticos son muy resistentes a los carbonatos fundidos y también a la oxidación y carburación de CO2. Sin embargo, se necesitan pruebas exhaustivas a 700°C con las nuevas mezclas de sal recién optimizadas y el CO2 supercrítico.

Reducción corrosiva

El uso de recubrimientos ha demostrado en varios sectores industriales ser una excelente opción para prevenir/reducir los procesos corrosivos a altas temperaturas durante muchos años.

Menor coste

El uso de recubrimientos en materiales de menor costo, no solo reduce el gasto de capital (CAPEX) sino también los gastos de operación y mantenimiento (OPEX), ya que los elementos recubiertos suelen tener vidas más largas.

Diseño

Los recubrimientos pueden diseñarse y adaptarse al comportamiento corrosivo específico de las sales recién desarrolladas sin tener que rediseñar las aleaciones y sin afectar sus propiedades mecánicas.
